Scope
What follows applies to this site alone. Sites we link to run their own policies, and any social platform we post on collects under its own terms, not ours.
The data that passes through
Your browser sends technical information to our server on every request: IP address, browser and device type, the pages you open, the referring address, and how long you stay. This is ordinary web-server behaviour and we do not tie it to a name.
The only information you hand over directly is an email address (if you subscribe) and the content of any message you send through the form.
How the data is used
- Operate and maintain the site.
- Measure, at the level of the whole audience, what cookies and baking content is useful.
- Reply to you.
- Deliver a newsletter you explicitly opted into.
- Comply with the law where it applies to us.
The companies involved
We rely on a small number of third parties, each with its own policy: Google Analytics for aggregate statistics, Google AdSense for advertising, the company that hosts the site and keeps server logs, and the service that sends the newsletter. Some of them set cookies of their own.
Data passed to the third parties named here crosses to the United States, where those companies operate. The transfer mechanisms are theirs and are documented in their own policies.
Subscribing
An email address is all the newsletter needs, and all it gets. It is used to send issues, never shared, and deleted from the list when you unsubscribe rather than marked inactive.
Lawful basis
European and United Kingdom law asks for a lawful basis, so here they are: consent for anything you opt into, legitimate interest for the operation and aggregate measurement of the site, and legal obligation where applicable. Consent is reversible on request.
How long anything lasts
Server logs are rotated by our hosting provider on its own schedule. Analytics data follows the retention period configured in Google Analytics. A newsletter address is kept until you unsubscribe, and a message sent through the contact form is kept as long as the exchange is useful and then deleted.
What you can ask for
Three requests are always available to you: show me what you hold, fix it, delete it. Newsletter unsubscribe is one click and takes effect at once. Cookies are refused in the browser, not here. EEA, UK and California readers have statutory rights on top of this, and we extend them to all.
No profiling
You are not profiled and no automated decision is taken about you. What the measurement produces is totals, not a view of any one reader.
What we do not do
There is no sale of personal information and no sharing for another party’s marketing. That answers the California opt-out question directly, rather than by pointing you at a form.
Children
This site is not aimed at anyone under 13, and we do not knowingly take data from that age group. Contact us if you think we have and it goes.
Keeping it safe
The site runs over HTTPS and access to anything we store is restricted. That is protection, not invulnerability, and we will not dress it up as more than it is.
Escalating
Complaints are best raised with us first, through the contact page, because that is quickest. You keep the right to go straight to your data protection authority instead.
Changes to this page
Any revision is dated at the top of the page, and anything substantial is flagged on the site itself.
